Stray Cinema

23.02.2007 13:31

I’ve always wanted to create my own film, and that’s partially what interested me in writing my very own screenplay, which I did. Writing it is great, but unless you have a studio (big or small) backing your work, you’re going to have to do a lot of work and spend a good amount of time and money to make it a reality. See, I don’t have multiple cameras, production skills, or a team of people to help make my film a reality, and that barrier to entry is so great that it keeps me from fulfilling my goal. Of course, if I could edit a movie that was already filmed and possibly get recognition for it, then I would be more motivated to get to work because most of the hard work has already been done for me. Stray Cinema is an open source film that gives anyone a chance to create their own version of the film.

Unlike most movies, you’re actually encouraged to edit the footage from Stray Cinema. Just download the footage in one of three formats, fire up your video editing software, and start creating. Once they receive thirty film submissions (which has already almost been accomplished), Stray Cinema will schedule a screening in London where the top five films will be shown as voted on by the online community. They’ll also be assembling a film festival cut which will incorporate multiple submissions and be sent to film festivals all over the world. If you missed your opportunity this year, then there’s always next year, because Stray Cinema will be an annual event. I guess we’ll just start calling you Steven Spielberg Jr. now…
